We thought it was about time we put together a showcase of our design work on the Ellington Park logo identity that we have created for our local park here in Ramsgate since the group was formed back in 2010.
Having been one of the original members of the fundraising group that became the ‘Friends of Ellington Park’ AND a graphic designer, Paul Cartwright offered to design a logo to aid the group in becoming a more formal entity.
THE FRIENDS OF… LOGO
Featuring traditional type and an architectural detail from the park’s Victorian, and slightly decaying bandstand, the Ellington Park logo identity has now become an icon for the park and features on park signage, event banners and public communication.
EARLY DAYS
Paul was then asked to create some marketing materials to support the group’s meetings and fund-raising activities. Early poster designs featured monochrome images from the park’s rich historical background and a contrasting red, earthy colouration to the logo.
As time went on the logo colour changed to the green that is recognised now and that is used as a smart enamelled membership badge for those subscribing to the group’s newsletters.
The ‘Friends’ consist of a very small group of hardworking locals who tend the park and arrange events to maintain its upkeep, improving it through public involvement and regular fund-raising activities.
POSTER TEMPLATES
To assist with this communication Paul created a series of brightly coloured poster templates. Each colour specifically relating to fund-raising events, public meetings and to the wildlife garden and general restoration topics.
The templates, with their strong rigid layout, allow the Friends to type and design within the central coloured area using standard word processing software and, regardless of typeface or imagery, still maintain an overall consistent park identity. (Examples can be see on the group’s Twitter feed.)
ONLINE IDENTITY
These blocks of colour also feature on the web banners and background images which appear on the group’s website, Facebook and Twitter pages. The colours are overlaid and contrasted with visitors’ own images of the park and its wildlife to form a changeable mosaic reflecting the seasons and diversity of the park and its history.
THE FUTURE
The park has recently been awarded a significant sum from the Heritage Lottery Fund and regeneration plans are underway to restore the bandstand and build much needed café and toilet facilities for the park’s visitors.
The new ‘hub’ will form a focus for the local neighbourhood offering activities for all ages.
We’re happy to have helped the Friends so far and look forward to seeing the park develop!
FRIENDS OF ELLINGTON PARK UPDATE!
Having successfully won a bid for funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, the Friends of Ellington Park have been working in partnership with Thanet District Council to restore the park’s bandstand, terrace and Victorian landscape along with building a new café, playground, community space and toilets.
To reflect this Paul Cartwright has updated the Friends of Ellington Park logo identity to reflect this fabulous achievement and regeneration and created a revised version of the logo (as shown below.)
The logo now has a friendlier, more contemporary typeface and since the refurbishment of the bandstand, from which the corner ‘bracket’ detail was taken, the complete detail of it has been revealed.
Paul has also updated the banner graphics for the Friends’ Facebook group page, maintaining the colours and natural imagery from before, but putting the new logo front and centre with the coloured key focus points displayed below.
